Discus Fish – The King of Freshwater Aquariums

Known as the King of the Aquarium, the Discus fish is one of the most beautiful and graceful freshwater species. With its round body shape, vibrant colors, and calm swimming style, Discus is a premium choice for aquarists who want an elegant and eye-catching display aquarium.

What Is a Discus Fish

Discus fish originate from the Amazon River basin and are prized for their bright colors, peaceful nature, and social behavior. Though slightly sensitive compared to beginner fish, Discus reward proper care with unmatched beauty and personality.

Ideal Aquarium Setup

  • Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres (larger for groups)
  • Temperature: 26–30°C
  • pH Range: 6.0–7.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Filtration: Powerful but gentle filtration
  • Decor: Live plants, driftwood, open swimming space

Discus thrive best in groups of 5 or more, which reduces stress and promotes natural behavior.

Feeding Requirements

Discus are omnivorous and require high-quality, protein-rich food:

  • Discus-specific pellets
  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)
  • Live food (occasionally)
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements

Feed small portions multiple times a day for optimal growth and coloration.
