Description

Taxiphyllum barbieri, widely known as Java Moss or Bogor Moss, is the most popular aquarium moss among aquascapers worldwide. Native to Vietnam, this tropical moss forms long, irregularly branched shoots that easily attach to rocks, driftwood, and other hardscape surfaces, making it perfect for decorating tanks, hiding equipment, or creating natural aquascapes.

Appearance & Growth

Java Moss grows fast, producing thread-like, dense shoots up to 1.5 mm wide. Individual leaves are small, but the moss can cover large areas over time. Its growth is denser under strong lighting, while low-light conditions produce thinner, less branched shoots. It can grow emersed on moist surfaces with high humidity.

Care Guidelines

  • Lighting: Thrives under low to moderate light; brighter light promotes dense, vibrant growth.
  • CO₂ & Fertilization: Grows well in low-CO₂ environments, but moderate CO₂ and regular fertilization enhance growth and appearance.
  • Substrate / Attachment: Does not require substrate; attaches to driftwood, rocks, or mesh naturally. Can be secured with thread or glue.
  • Water Parameters: Tolerates pH 5–8, soft to hard water, and temperatures 12–34°C.
