Description
The Sanke Koi, also known as Taisho Sanke, is a stunning tri-colored koi featuring a pure white base adorned with bold red (hi) and refined black (sumi) markings. Originating during Japan’s Taisho era (1912–1926), this elegant variety is one of the three famous Gosanke koi, alongside Kohaku and Showa, and remains a favorite among collectors worldwide.
Appearance:
Displays a clean, porcelain-white body (shiroji) highlighted by vibrant red patterns and accentuated with small, refined black markings. The balance of all three colors defines the beauty of a high-quality Sanke.
Key Traits:
- Pure white base color from nose to tail
- Deep, even red (hi) patches with well-defined edges
- Small, refined black (sumi) markings placed mainly above the lateral line
- Clean head with no black spots (a signature Sanke trait)
- Pectoral fins may have light black streaks, but no solid black base (motoguro)
Popular Varieties:
- Doitsu Sanke: Scaleless or partially scaled, with crisp color definition
- Ginrin Sanke: Glittering metallic scales for a shimmering effect
- Tancho Sanke: Rare type with a single red patch on the head, complemented by black and red body markings
Care Tips:
- Maintain high water quality for clean color contrast
- Provide balanced lighting to enhance the white base and red intensity
- Avoid overfeeding to prevent pigment fading or distortion
- Keep stable water parameters (pH 7.0–8.0) for vibrant coloration
Graceful and balanced, the Sanke Koi embodies purity, harmony, and refinement — a true classic that brings timeless beauty to any pond or collection.
