Description

An Oranda is a highly prized type of fancy goldfish (a domesticated variety of Carassius auratus). It is instantly recognizable by its distinctively chubby, ornamental appearance and is considered one of the most popular aquarium fish in the world.

 Characteristics

  • The Wen: Fleshy head growth resembles a raspberry. It starts growing at 3–4 months. It reaches full size at 2–3 years.
  • Egg-Shaped Body: Short, round, and compact torso. It lacks the streamlined shape of common goldfish.
  • Flowing Fins: Long, delicate, split caudal (tail) fin. It fans out beautifully when the fish stops moving.
  • Impressive Size: Typically grows to 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) in length.
  • Vibrant Colors: Available in orange, red, black.

Behavioral Traits

  • Slow Swimmers: Their bulky bodies and heavy fins make them slow and clumsy. They cannot compete with fast fish for food.
  • Peaceful & Docile: Highly gentle and social community fish. They thrive when kept with other slow-moving fancy goldfish.
  • Bottom Foragers: Spend hours sifting through gravel. They dig up substrate looking for leftover food morsels.
  • Interactive Pets: Very alert and intelligent. They quickly learn to recognize their owners and will swim to the glass for food.
  • Diurnal Routine: Active during daylight hours. They rest quietly near the tank bottom or inside plants at night.
