Description
The Buenos Aires Tetra (Hyphessobrycon anisitsi) is a robust and active freshwater fish that brings energy and vibrancy to any aquarium. Growing up to 2.75 inches (7 cm) in length, this tetra is known for its striking appearance, featuring a silvery body with a hint of gold or green shimmer. The Buenos Aires Tetra is also distinguished by its red-tinted fins, particularly the caudal and anal fins, which stand out against its sleek, metallic body.
Native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly around Buenos Aires, Argentina, this tetra is a hardy species that can adapt to a wide range of water conditions. Its resilience makes it an excellent choice for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike. Unlike more delicate tetras, the Buenos Aires Tetra is less sensitive to fluctuations in water parameters, thriving in temperatures between 64-82°F (18-28°C) and a pH range of 5.5 to 8.0.
The Buenos Aires Tetra is a social fish that prefers to be kept in schools of six or more, where it displays its natural, lively behavior. While generally peaceful, it can be slightly more boisterous than other tetras, so it pairs best with similarly sized and active tank mates. However, due to its active nature, it may nip at the fins of slower-moving, long-finned fish, so careful selection of tank mates is advised.
In terms of diet, the Buenos Aires Tetra is an omnivore with a hearty appetite. It will readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
