This species is best kept alone; either as a single fish or a pair. Because of their size and aggression, as well as being sub-tropical, tank mates are not recommended.These fish are sub-tropical. They require a winter season reaching around 16.7-18.3°C (62-65°F) and a summer season reaching around 26.7-27.8°C (80-82°F) . If kept at tropical temperatures all year round, they often become fat and develop cloudy eyes and fungus. Gill problems are common as well.
