Description

The Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis species) is a vibrant, eye-catching freshwater fish prized for its intense coloration and bold personality. At 5–6 cm (juvenile size), it already displays a beautiful red to orange base color highlighted with shimmering blue-green “jewel-like” spots across its body and fins. As it matures, these colors deepen into a striking crimson, especially during breeding.

Visual Characteristics

  • "Jewels": These are small, reflective turquoise, light blue, or neon green spots (spangles) scattered across their flanks, gill covers, and fins.
  • Black Spots: Most species feature two or three distinct black spots
  • Body Shape: They have a fusiform or oval-shaped body that is moderately compressed, with a pointed head and rounded tail fin.
