Description
The Pingu Glass Belly Guppy is a rare and striking variety of the common guppy (Poecilia reticulata), highly sought after for its unique combination of vibrant "Pingu" coloration and a translucent "Glass Belly". The Glass Belly trait is caused by an absence of guanine crystals, which normally create a metallic silver shine, leaving the abdominal area see-through. In females, this transparency allows for a clear view of their internal organs and developing fry.
Characteristics:
- Social Interaction: Peaceful and active schoolers that thrive in groups.
- Activity Levels: Constant mid-to-top water swimmers.
- Mating Habits: Persistent male courtship displays.
- Parental Instincts: Lacks parental care with a tendency to eat fry.
Care Recuriements:
Water Parameters & Quality
- Temperature: Ideally 76–80°F (24–27°C). Higher temperatures (82°F) can speed up growth and breeding but may shorten their lifespan to about 18 months .
- pH Level: They thrive in slightly alkaline water, between 7.0 and 8.0 .
- Hardness: Guppies prefer hard water with essential minerals like calcium and magnesium. Aim for a dGH of 8–15 .
- Maintenance: Perform weekly water changes of 10–25% to keep nitrates low.
Tank Setup & Environment
- Minimum Tank Size: While they can survive in 5 gallons, a 10-gallon tank is the recommended minimum for a small group of 6 to allow for active swimming .
- Filtration: Use a sponge filter, especially if you plan to breed them. It provides gentle flow and prevents small fry from being sucked into the intake .
- Live Plants: Species like Java Moss, Guppy Grass, or Hornwort are excellent. They help filter the water and provide essential hiding spots for newborn fry and stressed females .
- Lid Required: Guppies are energetic jumpers and can easily leap out of an open-top tank .
Diet & Feeding
- Staple Food: High-quality tropical flakes or micro-pellets .
- Live/Frozen Treats: Supplement 2–3 times a week with baby brine, daphnia, or bloodworms .
- Frequency: Feed adults 1–2 times daily in small amounts they can finish within one minute to avoid water pollution.
Social Structure & Tank Mates
- Compatible Mates: Peaceful community fish like Cory Catfish, Neon Tetras, Mollies, or Nerite Snails .
- Avoid: Larger or aggressive fish (like Barbs or Oscars) and known fin-nippers that could damage their delicate tails .
