விளக்கம்

The Kohaku koi is a classic ornamental fish known for its bright white body decorated with bold red patterns. It is one of the oldest and most popular koi varieties, admired for its simple yet elegant color combination.

The fish has smooth, clean white skin with well-defined red markings that appear in different pattern styles across the body. A good-quality Kohaku is judged by the purity of its white color and the balance of its red pattern.

Kohaku koi are peaceful, hardy, and can grow quite large, making them ideal for garden ponds and large aquariums. They are often considered the foundation of all koi varieties and are highly valued in ornamental fish keeping.

Characteristics

  • Body Shape: Ideally "torpedo-shaped" with a broad, rounded frame and a thick tail base.
  • Color Quality: The white base must be a pure, bright "snow white" without yellow or pink tints. Red markings  should be deep, uniform, and thick enough to hide the scales beneath.
  • Pattern Sharpness: Markings should have crisp edges. Two key terms are Kiwa (sharp trailing edges) and Sashi (sharp leading edges where red meets white).
  • Temperament: They are peaceful, social fish that often recognize their owners and can be trained to hand-feed.

Maintenance Requirements

  • Ammonia & Nitrite: Must be kept at 0 ppm; even low levels (0.15–0.25 ppm) can be toxic.
  • Nitrate: Ideally under 20–30 ppm.
  • pH Level: Stable between 7.0 and 8.5.
  • Temperature: Thrives best between 15°C and 25°C (59°F–77°F)

Feeding & Nutrition

  • Frequency: Feed 2–3 times daily in warm months, providing only what they can consume in 5 minutes to avoid polluting the water.
  • Treats: Supplement with fresh foods like watermelon, peas variety.
