The Red Rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus) is a striking freshwater species known for its vibrant coloration and active nature. Males, especially, boast a brilliant red hue that intensifies with age and during breeding, while females are more subdued with a silvery-gray appearance. These fish can grow to about 4-6 inches in length, making them a visually captivating addition to any tank.
Native to the lakes and rivers of Papua New Guinea, the Red Rainbowfish thrives in well-oxygenated, clean waters. A tank of at least 30 gallons is recommended, with temperatures between 74-82°F (23-28°C) and a slightly neutral pH of 6.5-7.5. They are peaceful, schooling fish and should be kept in groups to minimize stress, as they are very social by nature.
This species is an omnivore, requiring a balanced diet of high-quality flakes, pellets, live, and frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. In a well-maintained, planted aquarium with ample swimming space and occasional hiding spots, the Red Rainbowfish will flourish, displaying its vivid colors and lively behavior. With proper care, they can live for 5-8 years.
