Description
Description
This is a prominent semi-aquatic, perennial swamp plant native to the tropical wetlands, rivers, and slow-moving streams of South America. It grows in a beautiful rosette formation and is uniquely adaptable. It can thrive either completely submerged underwater (in aquariums) or emersed with its foliage standing tall above the water line (in ponds, open tanks, or mud setups).
- Dual Growth Habits: Exhibits distinct leaf shapes depending on the environment. Submerged foliage tends to be narrower and more lanceolate, while emersed leaves grow broad, thick, and spoon- or heart-shaped.
- Long Flowering Stalks: Healthy, established plants push up long, arching aerial stems that grow out of the water to produce blossoms.
- White Blossoms: Features delicate, three-petaled white flowers arranged along the stem, punctuated by tiny bright yellow centers.
Benefits
- Excellent Water Filtration: It acts as a powerful natural biological filter. Its extensive root system absorbs excess nitrates, phosphates, and heavy metals from the water, which effectively helps suppress unwanted algae growth.
- Ecosystem Support: The robust, tall stalks and broad leaves provide natural shade, shelter, and highly secure hiding spots for fish, fry, and small invertebrates.
- Versatile Landscaping Value: Highly prized in both indoor aquascaping (as a bold midground or background statement plant) and outdoor pond landscaping.
Characteristics
- Hardiness: Extremely resilient and low-maintenance, making it a perfect selection for beginner gardeners and aquarists.
- Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under optimal conditions. It can reach heights anywhere from 25 to 60 cm.
- Water & Light Requirements: Prefers warm tropical temperatures (20°C–28°C) and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels (6.0–7.5). It thrives best when given moderate to bright lighting.
- Propagation: It naturally reproduces via adventitious plantlets that form along its overhanging flower stems. These small runners develop their own roots and can eventually be detached to grow independently.
