Description
The Benigoi is a single-colored koi admired for its deep, uniform red or orange-red tone covering the entire body, head, and fins. Its beauty lies in simplicity — no white (shiro) or black (sumi) markings, just rich, glossy color and smooth skin. Some show a faint net-like (fukuran) scale pattern, while white-tipped fins mark the Aka Hajiro type.
Appearance:
The ideal Benigoi showcases a deep, velvety red or orange hue that covers its entire body, including the head and fins. Its clean, solid tone—with no white or black markings—creates a bold and striking presence. High-quality specimens feature a glossy skin texture that enhances their radiant color. Some may display a faint net-like pattern (known as fukuran).
Variations:
- Aka Muji: Solid red/orange non-metallic koi
- Ginrin Benigoi: Sparkling, metallic-scaled version
- Doitsu Benigoi: Scaleless type with a sleek finish
Traits & Behavior:
Calm, friendly, and often first to hand-feed; ideal for beginners. Grows large (up to 30+ inches) and adds strong visual contrast in ponds.
Care Tips:
Keep water clean (pH 7.0–8.0), provide balanced food, and ensure ample swimming space for healthy growth and vivid color.
Timeless and bold, the Benigoi Koi represents purity, confidence, and classic koi beauty.
