Description

The Ghost Knifefish (7-8 cm) is a captivating and mysterious freshwater species admired for its sleek appearance and graceful movement. At this size, the fish is still in its juvenile stage, showcasing its slender, knife-like body that will eventually grow much larger, potentially reaching up to 20 inches in adulthood.

Appearance: The Ghost Knifefish at 7-8 cm has a smooth, elongated body covered in deep black scales, resembling the shape of a blade. While predominantly black, you may notice faint white markings near its head and the tip of its tail, adding a subtle contrast to its overall dark coloration. One of its most distinctive features is the absence of a dorsal fin, with a long, continuous anal fin extending from the belly to the tail. This unique fin produces a mesmerizing, wave-like motion as the fish glides through the water.

Behavior: Though still small, the Ghost Knifefish already exhibits many of the behavioral traits that define this species. It is a nocturnal creature, meaning it is most active at night or in low-light conditions. During the day, it tends to be shy and prefers to hide in caves, plants, or other structures within the tank. This fish is known for its ability to generate weak electrical pulses, which it uses to navigate and detect prey in murky water.

While typically peaceful, this species can be territorial with its own kind or with smaller fish, especially in confined spaces. It is best suited for a community tank with similarly sized fish that share its calm temperament.

Habitat and Tank Requirements:

Even at this juvenile size, the Ghost Knifefish requires a well-maintained environment to thrive. A tank size of at least 227 litres is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space, with larger tanks being preferable as it grows. The ideal tank should include soft substrates, as the fish’s sensitive underside can be damaged by rough or sharp materials. Plenty of hiding spots, such as caves, driftwood, and densely planted areas, are essential to help the fish feel secure during the day.

Water conditions should be carefully monitored, with the temperature kept between 72-82°F (22-28°C) and the pH between 6.5-7.5. Soft to moderately hard water is preferred, and the lighting should be kept dim or supplemented with shaded areas to match the Ghost Knifefish's nocturnal habits.

Diet: As a carnivorous species, the Ghost Knifefish at 7-8 cm requires a high-protein diet. Live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms, and small insects are ideal for young specimens. It may also accept finely chopped fish or shrimp. As it grows, the diet can expand to include other meaty foods or high-quality pellets specifically formulated for carnivorous fish. Feeding should occur in the evening or night when the fish is most active.
