Description

The Pumpkin Snail is a small, eye-catching freshwater mollusc. It grows to about 2 to 3 centimetres in size. Its most famous feature is its smooth, dome-shaped shell. The shell displays a vibrant orange to deep reddish-orange color. It is often accented with dark brown or black stripes, spirals, or spots, making it look like a tiny, moving pumpkin.

Features & Characteristics

  • Hardy Nature: They are resilient and adapt well to standard tropical aquarium environments.
  • Non-Invasive: They cannot reproduce in freshwater. They need brackish water (a mix of fresh and salt) for their eggs to hatch, preventing tank overpopulation.
  • Operculum (Trapdoor): They possess a small trapdoor that they close tightly to protect themselves from predators or dry conditions.
  • Lifespan: They typically live for 1 to 2 years under proper care.
  • Active Foragers: They spend almost all their waking hours moving across surfaces looking for food.

Benefits

  • Algae Control: They are elite cleaning crews that devour green, brown, and film algae from glass and rocks.
  • Plant Safe: Unlike other species, they do not eat live aquarium plants, only consuming dead plant matter and algae.
  • Low Maintenance: They require very little attention if your aquarium has a stable ecosystem and natural biofilm.
  • Community Friendly: They are completely peaceful and never bother fish, shrimp, or frogs.
