Description
Description
The OB Peacock Cichlid is a striking African cichlid prized for its unique mottled “OB” (Orange Blotch) pattern combined with vibrant blues, reds, and yellows. Native to Lake Malawi, this peacock cichlid is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for color, activity, and personality in a freshwater setup.
Appearance
The OB Peacock features an elongated, streamlined body typical of Peacock Cichlids, with well-developed dorsal and anal fins that often display electric blue or reddish highlights.
- Males develop intense coloration as they mature
-
Females remain more subdued in color
Each fish has a unique blotched pattern, making every specimen one of a kind.
Temperament & Behavior
OB Peacocks are less aggressive than Mbuna cichlids, but males can become territorial, especially during breeding or when housed with other males.
- Active, energetic swimmers
- Prefer open swimming areas with defined territories
- Best kept with similarly tempered species such as other Peacocks or Haplochromis
Maintaining adequate tank space and visual barriers helps reduce aggression.
Diet
- In the wild, OB Peacocks feed on small invertebrates. In captivity, they thrive on a protein-rich, varied diet, including:
- High-quality cichlid pellets
- Protein-based flakes
- Occasional live or frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia)
- A balanced diet enhances coloration and overall vitality.
Compatibility
- Compatible with Peacock Cichlids, Haps, and mild Mbuna species
- Avoid highly aggressive fish or very peaceful, small species
- Recommended ratio: 1 male to multiple females to reduce male aggression
