விளக்கம்
The Clown Killifish is a small, beautifully patterned freshwater fish known for its striking striped body and colorful tail. It is one of the most popular nano top-dwelling fish in the aquarium hobby due to its peaceful nature and unique swimming behavior near the water surface.
This fish has a slender body with bold black horizontal stripes and a colorful tail that often shows red, yellow, and blue tones. Its small size and bright appearance make it ideal for planted nano aquariums.
Characteristics
Attractive Striped Body Pattern
Clown killifish have a distinctive body with black horizontal stripes running from head to tail, giving them a “clown-like” appearance. Their tail fins are often brightly colored, especially in males.
Very Small Nano Fish
They typically grow only about 3–4 cm in length, making them perfect for small aquariums and aquascapes.
Surface-Dwelling Fish
This species naturally stays near the top layer of the aquarium, often resting among floating plants or near the water surface.
Peaceful Temperament
Clown killifish are extremely peaceful and do not harm other fish, making them ideal for community nano tanks.
Sexual Dimorphism
Males are more colorful with longer, more vibrant fins, while females are slightly duller and rounder in shape.
Short but Active Lifespan
They usually live around 2–3 years but remain active and colorful throughout their life when well cared for.
Behaviour
Top Water Swimming Behaviour
Clown killifish spend most of their time swimming just under the water surface. They rarely go to the bottom of the tank.
Calm and Gentle Movement
They move slowly and gracefully, often hovering near floating plants rather than constantly swimming fast.
Shoaling but Not Tight Schooling
They prefer to stay in small groups but do not form tight schools like tetras. Instead, they loosely stay near each other.
Feeding at Surface
They naturally feed on insects and small organisms at the water surface and eagerly accept floating foods in aquariums.
Jumping Behaviour
They are excellent jumpers, especially when startled, so aquariums require a tight-fitting lid.
Territorial During Breeding
Males may become slightly territorial when courting females, displaying fins and chasing rivals gently.
Peaceful Community Behaviour
They coexist well with other small, non-aggressive fish, especially bottom-dwellers and mid-level nano fish.
Preference for Planted Tanks
They feel most secure in aquariums with floating plants, which provide shade and cover at the surface.
Curious but Shy Nature
They are curious fish but can be slightly shy in open, uncovered tanks without plant cover.
