Description
The Magenta Big Ear Guppy (also known as the Magenta Dumbo Ear Guppy) is a striking ornamental fish prized for its vibrant magenta-to-purple body coloration and oversized, wing-like pectoral fins. This variety is a mutation-based strain, often cross-bred with other lineages like Moscow or Tiger lines to create unique hues and patterns.
Key Characteristics
- Coloration: Typically features a deep magenta or purplish body, sometimes transitioning to red or orange towards the tail in specific sub-strains like the "Magenta Tiger".
- Big Ear Trait: These guppies are bred for significantly enlarged pectoral fins, giving them a distinctive "elephant ear" look as they swim.
- Size: Males usually grow to 1.5–4 cm (0.6–1.6 in), while females are larger at 3–7 cm (1.2–2.8 in).
- Hardiness: They are generally hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists
Characteristics
- Pectoral Fins ("Big Ears"): The most defining feature is the oversized, wing-like pectoral fins that resemble elephant ears. In high-quality specimens, these ears are wide-spread vertically and may have a dark blue or purple hue.
- Vibrant Coloration: The "Magenta" gene creates a deep purple-to-reddish body color, often with a metallic shimmer under aquarium lights.
- Tail Shape: Often found with Delta or Halfmoon tails, which further enhance their elegant appearance
- Temperament: These are peaceful and social community fish that coexist well with other non-aggressive species like Neon Tetras or Corydoras.
- Swimming Style: Due to their large fins, they swim with a slower, more graceful "flapping" motion compared to standard guppies.
- Activity Level: They are energetic and spend much of their time in the upper layers of the aquarium.
Care & Tank Requirements
- Temperature: 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
- Water Conditions: pH level of 6.8 to 7.8 (slightly alkaline) with a hardness of 10 to 30 kH.
- Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for a small group; for a single guppy, at least 5 gallons is necessary.
- Diet: They are omnivorous and thrive on a mix of high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen foods like brine shrimp.
- Setup: Use a lid on your tank, as guppies are known to jump.
