The Alligator Gar is one of the most powerful and prehistoric-looking freshwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its armor-like scales, elongated snout, and massive size, this extraordinary species is best suited for experienced aquarists with large tanks or ponds.
Appearance & Size
- Juvenile Size: 6–12 inches (commonly sold size)
- Adult Size: Can exceed 2–3 meters in ponds
- Coloration: Olive green to brown with lighter belly
- Body Type: Thick, cylindrical body with hard ganoid scales
- Mouth: Broad, alligator-like jaw with sharp teeth

Alligator Gars are not suitable for small aquariums and require long-term planning.
Feeding Requirements
Alligator Gars are carnivorous predators:
- Live or frozen fish
- Prawns, shrimp, earthworms
- Meaty frozen foods
- High-protein carnivore pellets (training required)
Feed juveniles daily and adults 2–3 times per week. Avoid overfeeding.
Behavior & Compatibility
- Aggressive predator
- Will eat smaller fish
- Best kept alone or with very large tank mates
- Not community-safe
They are generally calm but highly territorial and dominant.
