Description

A popular koi variety known for its solid metallic yellow or golden color. It has a bright, shiny appearance that reflects light, making it stand out beautifully in ponds and aquariums.

Key Characteristics

  • Color & Luster: They feature a consistent, vibrant yellow or gold tone across their entire body. A high-quality specimen has a brilliant metallic sheen (luster) that makes it glow, even in murkier pond water.
  • Body Type: Yamabuki Ogon are known for their hearty appetites and can grow quite large, often reaching 28 to 32 inches (70–80 cm).
  • Scales: As they age, many develop fukurin—a netting-like effect where the skin grows between the scales, creating a textured, multi-dimensional look.
  • Temperament: They are generally friendly, confident swimmers and are often among the first in a pond to become hand-tame for feeding

Maintanance

  • pH Level: Aim for 7.0 to 8.5. They prefer slightly alkaline water.
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F).
  • Ammonia & Nitrite: Must be kept at 0 ppm. These are toxic byproducts of fish waste.
  • Water Changes: Replace 10–20% of the pond water weekly to manage nitrate levels and replenish trace minerals. Always use a dechlorinator like those from Petco if using tap water.
