Description
The Carbon Rili Shrimp is an ornamental variant native to Taiwan . It belongs to the extremely popular and hardy Neocaridina genus, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced aquascapers .
These shrimp are highly active foragers that spend their days scavenging for food . They add continuous movement and a pop of visual drama to a tank, looking particularly spectacular against rich green live plants or dark substrates
Key Features
- Distinct carbon black head and tail with transparent midsection
- Unique “Rili” pattern for high visual contrast
- Excellent natural algae and biofilm cleaner
- Peaceful and ideal for community aquariums
- Active and constantly grazing
Characteristics
- Relentless Foragers: Spend nearly 100% of their waking hours picking at surfaces with their tiny claws to eat algae and biofilm.
- Complete Docility: They are entirely peaceful and cannot harm any other tank inhabitants, including newborn fish fry or other shrimp.
- Sociable Nature: Thrive and show more active, natural behaviors when kept in a colony of 10 or more.
- Active Swimmers: While they mostly walk on plants and substrate, they will actively swim through the water column when exploring or when males are searching for a recently molted female.
Maintanance
- Temperature: 22°C to 26°C is the sweet spot
- pH Level: 6.5 to 7.5
- Tank Size: Minimum 20 litres, though 40 litres provides superior parameter stability .
- Substrate: Choose dark gravel or sand; a dark environment encourages them to display their most intense black/blue colors .
- Filtration: A sponge filter is mandatory . Power filters and heavy currents will easily suck up or exhaust tiny shrimplets .
- Plants & Hides: Pack the tank with Java Moss, Anubias, floating plants, and natural leaf litter (like Indian Almond Leaves) . This builds up the biofilm they constantly eat and grants them security during molting .
- Natural Foraging: They do not need to be fed daily in a well-established planted tank . They naturally thrive on existing algae and biofilm .
- Supplemental Food: Supplement their diet 2 to 3 times a week with high-quality shrimp pellets or algae wafers .
- Fresh Treats: Offer blanched spinach, zucchini, or mulberry leaves once in a while .
Crucial Rule: Remove any uneaten artificial food after 2 hours so it does not rot and create a deadly ammonia spike
