Description

The Horned Nerite Snail (Clithon corona/diadema) is a tiny, peaceful freshwater snail native to the coastal rivers of Southeast Asia. It is famous for the thorny, horn-like protrusions growing directly from its shell. These snails feature striking swirl patterns in combinations of black, yellow, gold, and olive green.

Key Features

  • Physical Horns: Rigid, calcium-based spikes that grow out of the shell.
  • Compact Size: Miniature bodies reaching only 1.2 to 2 cm (0.5 to 0.75 inches).
  • Vibrant Patterns: High-contrast, bumblebee-like color bands.
  • Operculum "Trapdoor": A protective front door used to seal themselves safely inside their shell.

Benefits

  • Elite Algae Control: They continuously scrape off stubborn green spot algae, brown diatoms, and film.
  • Plant Safe: They lack the jaw strength to eat live aquarium plants, making them 100% safe for aquascapes.
  • Controlled Breeding: They will not overpopulate your tank because their eggs require brackish (salty) water to hatch.
  • Low Bio-load: Their tiny size means they produce very little waste compared to larger snails.

Characteristics

  • Behavior: Strictly peaceful, nocturnal, and highly active foragers that rarely stop moving.
  • Defense Mechanism: When threatened, they tuck in and point their sharp horns outward to prevent predators from swallowing them.
  • Lifespan: They typically live for 1 to 2 years under proper water conditions.
  • Tidal Nature: They are excellent climbers and will occasionally crawl above the waterline, requiring a secure tank lid.
